We need tractor drivers that can take the kids on wagon rides. This is part time and suitable for those who have some extra time. No experience necessary as we will provide training. The refugee resettlement committee has two requests for help for the al-Sama'neh and Asfour families as follows: 1. Mohanad and Salmi are both very anxious to find work; it would be great if people in the congregation could think about their network of contacts that might have positions available on a part-time or full-time basis. They might also be available for volunteer work as this would bolster their Canadian workplace experience. Salmi's work background includes time working on a farm and as a mechanic; Mohanad has run his own small cafe, where he made falafel, shawermas, and sweets, and he has also worked as a painter. 2. English classes are on summer holidays for the families; they would very much appreciate volunteer tutors over the summer, both for parents and children. The Abner Martin Music Scholarship ($3,500 value last year) is awarded annually by Menno Singers to one student who: will be enrolled in a full-time music major or minor program at the undergraduate or graduate level in 2010-11; is affiliated with an MCEC congregation; and has demonstrated involvement and proficiency in musical activities in church and community. Application deadline is September 15, 2010. For more information and/or an application form contact Lewis Brubacher at lbrubacher@sympatico.ca. More details at http://www.mennofoundation.ca/learning/scholarships. Patrick Prestwich has changed his email address as follows, <patrick.prestwich@gmail.com> please make changes to your church directories. Please be advised that effective September 30, 2010, Bell Mobility will terminate the Lease Agreement between Rouge Valley Mennonite Church and Bell Mobility Inc. Their Engineers have advised that this site will no longer operate within the parameters of their network requirements. If you have questions please contact Paul W. Reesor, Chair of Ministry Council or see letter from Bell Mobility posted in foyer. Church on the Rock has invited our children from Grade 1 to Grade 7 to participate in their children’s overnight camp at Pine Orchard Camp ground in Whitchurch/Stouffville from Thurs., July 29 to Sun., Aug. 1/10. If interested, get in touch with Lilli Keleshian at lillikeleshian@hotmail.com, it would be nice for our children to get to know each other. Mark your calendars for the annual Black Creek Pioneer Village MCC Relief Sale on Sat., Sept. 18. Keep in mind that jams, jellies, pickles and baking are always needed. Contact Paul W. Reesor 905-642-0794 if you have any questions. Reminder re knitted items for the sale - Mitts, socks, scarves, hats & slippers sell well. There are two baskets in the foyer for wool contributions and for knitted items. Please call Sue Philips with any questions. This is how your financial support of Mennonite Church Canada is ministering...from across the street to around the world! The Strategic Task force for Pastoral Leadership Development, which includes representation from our post secondary schools and the Area Churches, has begun its work to map out a plan that will provide sufficient and qualified pastors and congregational leadership for Mennonite Church Canada for the next two decades. Your giving makes it possible to plan for the future leadership needs of the church.
The spiritual disciplines of service and secrecy
Service
As Christians, who place a strong emphasis upon service, we take this form of discipleship almost for granted. This is who we are and this is what we do. This is good and we want to continue to foster and nurture this aspect of discipleship wherever we can. The doing is easy for us and we are comfortable with the “ins and outs” of doing. However, what might be more of a challenge for us is the being. Often our doing overshadows our being. In our “business” we can forget, neglect, what keeps us grounded and centred- our connection with Jesus. When we practice acts of service (doing), while centred in Jesus (being), we are better equipped to do. We will have a better sense of when to say yes or no. We will be better in tune with our motivations, making it easier to observe Sabbath rest and not to do out of a sense of guilt, need for affirmation, admiration, or approval from others or God. This is critical, especially in our fast paced society.
This coming week, take a walk and ask God to help you see what it is God has “put in your heart to do for him.” What do you need to say no or yes to as a result of this conversation with God?
Secrecy
Secrecy, as a spiritual discipline, cuts to the heart of our motivations. What we do and why we do it are sometimes known to us, but more often then not, our motivations remain unconscious. The spiritual discipline of secrecy, doing acts of service anonymously, provides an opportunity to discern our heart in the light of God’s grace.
Over the next few weeks think of some things you can do secretly for others. Question to ponder: What fears or sins might we slowly overcome through practicing this discipline of secrecy?
Words to ponder
“To serve is to be ‘a feather on the breath of God.’” Hildegard of Bingen
“The discipline of secrecy will help us break the grip of human opinion over our souls and our action” Dallas Willard

1. Too often we come up with our own list of distractions that keep us from prayer. These might be daily tasks that intrude on sacred time (there are piles of dishes and laundry to be done); external interruptions (telemarketer phone calls); or deeper internal struggles of the heart (I don't know how to pray; I don't have anything to pray about; I am unworthy to enter prayer). Make a list of these issues and feelings and ask God what he thinks about them.
Any number of things can call our attention away from God, but our relationship with our Heavenly Father is developed in the midst of daily life. God knows what you have to do. You may find keeping your hands busy with daily tasks frees you to create sacred heart-time for God. External interruptions can become reminding calls to prayer (e.g. say a breath prayer every time you answer the phone). Internal struggles should become your next 'topic' of discussion with the One who created you and has walked every step of your life with you. God loves you so much he even longs to hear from you when you are angry/bored//frustrated with him.
2. God spoke in very unique ways throughout Joseph's life. The 'language' he used was creative and specific to Joseph (e.g. in all of Pharaoh’s court, only Joseph was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams). Your Creator knows you better than you know yourself. What 'languages' does he use to speak to you? Take some time this week to 'indulge' in a special way that you and God speak to each other. Listen to some inspiring music and open your heart to hear God's voice in it and let your heart respond to his love for you. Admire a painting that draws you into a conversation with the first and ultimate Artist. Spend some time in a garden and thank God for the explosion of creativity around you and the bounty of his provision.
3. Read Psalm 71. The psalmist speaks of having a relationship with God from birth, through all of the seasons of life, and into old age. Take some time to reflect on your whole life (the good, the bad, and the ugly). How has God spoken to you through your various seasons of life? Has he used different 'languages' at different times? What is his loving message for you today?
Make this Psalm a prayer for your life. Quietly pray each line and recall God's relationship with you in the circumstances mentioned and anticipate how he will encounter you in the experiences yet to come.

Saskatchewan MDS board and volunteers have much on their plate. The summer youth project began July 3 in Simmie SK building a lodge for Rock Solid Refuge, a ministry for troubled teen boys. Meanwhile, a tornado in Raymore and extreme flooding in Yorkton may need MDS assistance. Volunteers did cleanup the last days of June in Maple Creek following major flooding there. 2. Alberta MDS volunteers continue to bring clean up crews to Medicine Hat area to clean up after flooding there mid June. 3. Manitoba volunteers cleaned up 37 flooded basements in Emerson early June. 4. Ontario MDS board and volunteers have investigated tornado damage (Midland and Leamington) and cleaned up Leamington area properties in conjunction with Samaritan’s Purse. Now they are enduring a heat wave which can be dangerous to the elderly and sick along with the possibilities of power outages. Continue to pray for the people in the USA Gulf Coast who worry about hurricanes while watching the oil spill grow across the waters that feed them. Their shrimp boats are quietly moored and they mostly try not to think about what will happen into the future with their livelihoods and with the ecosystem. MDS has re-opened the Diamond project in Louisiana to have a few volunteers present (home rebuilding as usual) to listen and be present with the Gulf Coast residents while they grieve and worry. Cards of hope and caring may be sent to MDS in Winnipeg or Akron which will then be passed on to residents in the Gulf Coast.
Imaginative Reading
We do not always have to study the Bible to hear God’s word through it. We can meditate on Scripture by using our imagination to enter the Bible scene. We imagine what we would see, hear, touch, taste or smell as we watch the scene unfold before us. We can put ourselves in the shoes of the participants and see what the story might mean for us. Can the Bible “baptize” your imagination?
Read Mark 10:17-23
Imagine yourself as the rich young ruler. What does it feel like to be invited to be a follower of Jesus, but be unable to make the choice that would free you to follow?
Imagine you are watching the dialogue. What surprises you? * Jesus invites the rich young ruler to follow? * Jesus speaks to the real need of the rich young ruler in great love, but with unyielding firmness * Jesus will not strike a deal; he shows the rich young ruler that following Jesus means full reliance on God
What do you take from this passage? * Money blocks true faith – only the poor really know God * Give up the thing that blocks you from relying on Jesus * Hear the love in Jesus’ voice even when He confronts you * Jesus wants you as a follower, in spite of …… * You won’t know the treasure of heaven until …… * Real satisfaction, real meaning, comes from Jesus alone
Suppose the rich young ruler is not really serious about following Jesus, but just wants to demonstrate his spiritual status. Why does Jesus confront him with this choice? Suppose instead that the rich young ruler IS serious about a deeper spiritual life? What does the choice that Jesus puts before him say about spiritual life? How are you coming to Jesus? What choices must you make?

Putting it into Practice – Solitude and Silence
Here are some questions you can ponder throughout the coming week, on your own or as a family…
Read Mark 1:21-34 1. If you had been Jesus, what activities recounted here would have exhausted you? 2. Which ones would have exhilarated you?
Read Mark 1:35-37 1. Jesus had an exhausting day the day before – why do you suppose He got up so early the next morning? 2. After a really busy day how do you unwind? Why is it important to stop and reflect with God?
Take some time to be still and quiet before God. Find a quiet place and prepare a space that invites meditation and rest (this could include lighting a candle, finding a comfortable place to sit or recline, dimming the lights, having a view of nature…it is entirely up to your tastes and preferences). Be quiet and listen. If thoughts intrude, just acknowledge them and try to clear your mind again. Listen for God. Afterwards, consider the following questions: ~What do you find inconvenient or uncomfortable about solitude and silence? ~What was God saying to you through the silence?
Words to ponder:
“The sole purpose of solitude is knowing God, and those who know God will care for God’s children…It is our of solitude, out of being authentically present to God, that the deepest care for God’s creatures comes.” ~ David Rensberger
“In silence, God pours into you a deep, inward love. This experience of love is one that will fill and permeate your whole being. [It] is the beginning of an indescribable blessedness.” ~ Jeanne Guyon (who spent more than 20 years in prison and exile)

Building the Future Together - MDS (Mennonite Disaster Service) has had an overwhelming and powerful response from our constituents after disasters in recent years. This has shown MDS that its current bi-national office in Akron, PA is too small and lacks flexibility. A new bi-national office, warehouse and meeting room are currently being built, designed to support the expanded MDS mission. It will help MDS equip more project leaders. They can then facilitate more projects and volunteers for better disaster response. The new facility will also help MDS increase volunteer training though meeting rooms and space to accommodate office volunteers. Please go to the MDS website to follow the progress of the project, and to learn more. www.mds.mennonite.net

New Rockway scholarships! We are now accepting applications for scholarships in the areas of academics, faith leadership, community service and music. These financial awards are for the 2010-2011 school year. Go to www.rockway.ca/scholarships for application forms and further information. Those of us who live seemingly ordinary lives at home may sometimes feel as though we have little to contribute to Mennonite Church Canada’s ministries abroad, but this is not so! Sharing financial resources helps these ministries thrive and so does the encouragement we provide. We can make a difference by connecting personally with Witness Workers or by partnering with a Witness ministry through Congregational Partnerships. (See http://www.mennonitechurch.ca/tiny/1326 or (http://www.mennonitechurch.ca/tiny/1327, respectively, for more information.)

Mennonite Disaster Service Notes: 1. MDS Summer Youth Program. There are still openings for small groups (10 or less) for several weeks in July & August. MDS youth will build a “house” for Rock Solid Refuge near Swift Current SK that will house boys ages 13-17 who struggle with addictions. Contact Evelyn at 1-866-261-1274 for more information and scheduling. 2. MDS Binational projects in the Gulf Coast are still in need of cooks and skilled construction crew leaders during mid-May to end of July. Contact Evelyn in the Winnipeg MDS office 1-866-261-1274 if you are able to lend a few weeks of time and have the skills needed. 3. Praise God for 60 years of MDS serving people affected by disaster! 2010 marks MDS having been the disaster response arm of Mennonite churches in Canada and the USA. We are grateful to the thousands of volunteers and donors who allow this ministry to be successful.

Listening to God
Approximately nine years ago RVMC began a visioning process in which participants were led through a series of gatherings to discern God’s leading- past, present and future. These were fruitful gatherings and helped the congregation over the next few years. We identified the following; Pray first, Hear God’s Word through open dialogue, Take another look... step forward in faith, Empower and enable people to use and develop their gifts, Include all persons in congregational life, Go and make disciples, Respond joyfully. We focused our energies into each heading from year to year.
Since then we have gathered periodically to continue to discern God’s leading... to review various parts to the visioning process and what emerged. Since God’s Spirit calls us and equips us for ministry in our context, which continually evolves, we need to pursue the task of listening to God and what the Spirit of Christ is saying to RVMC.
Over the past couple of years I have been participating in a number of workshops that have dealt with such topics as Appreciative Inquiry, Understanding the Congregational Life Cycle and Leading Congregations through Change. These workshops looked at how we build upon congregational strengths, understand congregational life cycles and how we have holy conversations in the midst of change.
RVMC had a group meet to look at what changes are occurring in our context. We discussed such books as The New Conspirators; creating the future one mustard seed at a time, by Tom Sine, and, The Irresistible Revolution, by Shane Claiborne. Our reading helped inform us how the Spirit of God is active in the midst of profound changes through different “movements” within the North American Church. We asked ourselves, “what is the Spirit of God saying to us at RVMC in the GTA?”
At the School for Ministers in February of 2009, I picked up a book entitled, Springs of Living Water; Christ-Centered Church Renewal, to read on Sabbatical. While reading this book I sensed an “Ah ha!” moment in that all the previous scenarios were converging for me in this book. Christ-centered spirituality is what will sustain RVMC through the seismic changes occurring in the broader society around us and in our midst. Springs of Living Water; Christ-Centered Church Renewal, is user friendly and has good applications that churches can apply to their own context. It is not, however, a “cookie-cutter” or “7 step” process. It recognizes that each context is different and what God is doing in each context has it’s own particulars.
Ministry Council is commending to the congregation that RVMC continue this journey of listening to God by formally engaging Springs of living water as a resource. The recommendation is to allot a three year time frame to allow the full benefits of this process to unfold in our midst. Part of beginning this process is a call to prayer. Prayer for leadership. Prayer for personal and corporate renewal. Prayer that imagines faithful ways to be church into the 21st century. Prayer for a listening heart. Submitted for your prayerful consideration as we approach the Annual General Meeting. For more information and background see www.churchrenewalservant.org Sincerely, Pastor Pieter
Listening to God Update:
In follow up to the affirmation of the Listening to God proposal (please refer to other side) presented at the Annual meeting, January 2010, Ministry Council, Congregational Care Elders, Leadership Elders, and the Missions Committee, have all being reading David Young’s book, Springs of Living Water; Christ-Centered Church Renewal.
Actions taken to date:
* On Saturday February 27, we hosted a retreat to reflect on how we see our story, as a congregation, connecting with and echoing God’s Story. * Various Leadership conversations: We have been, and will continue to meet, on selected Sunday mornings to reflect, pray, and discuss how we might faithfully implement this renewal process here at Rouge Valley. * Various leaders have been reading supplementary reading in preparation for our conversations, on such topics as Appreciative Inquiry, Spiritual disciplines, Church Structures and Conversations regarding change... * Prayer: There is a group that meets with Pastor Pieter on Sunday mornings 10:00 to 10:30 am, to hold this process before God in prayer- all are welcome to join.
Future Action
* Our goal is to finish our reading/reflections/discerning with particular attention to Young’s book by the end of June. * Setting up a Blog in which the congregation can be part of an ongoing conversation about our journey of renewal. The content of this blog will pose questions and welcome discussion, comments, questions, reflections... Goal is to have this blog operating before the summer begins. * Over the summer we will draft a plan to have implemented for the fall. * There will be congregational consultation meetings throughout the fall and into the winter of 2010-11.
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, insights, please feel free to contact either of the Pastors, or Ministry Council members.
This update has been prepared by Pastor Pieter on behalf of Ministry Council
